Farmlevel Story
Born from Verve’s Farmlevel Nursery Project, this Chiroso from Urrao, Colombia highlights the impact of collaboration, care, and climate in one expressive cup. Planted and nurtured by 23 smallholder producers, these high-elevation plots showcase the variety’s vibrant character. With layered notes of Grapefruit, Nectarine, and Fudge, the cup reflects a shared commitment to quality, collaboration, and the future of coffee in Urrao. $1 dollar from every bag sold goes back to the Farmlevel Foundation, empowering producers to innovate, regenerate, and lead the next chapter of coffee.
60,000 Chiroso seedlings were planted in Urrao, Colombia, through the dedication of 23 local farmers working to bring this rare and climate-resilient variety to life. This harvest represents more than just a cup. It’s a glimpse into a future being cultivated at origin.
The Nursery Project was launched in partnership with Pergamino and the Allied Farmers Project, aiming to preserve and expand access to Chiroso, which stands out for its floral aromatics, bright acidity, and citrus-driven profile. Some genetic studies suggest Ethiopian landrace heritage, which may explain its unique sensory qualities.
While Urrao presents logistical challenges due to its remote location and limited infrastructure, its high-altitude terrain, typically above 1,800 meters, provides ideal growing conditions. Slow cherry maturation at these elevations enhances sweetness and complexity in the cup. Though Chiroso yields less than modern hybrids, its exceptional quality has made it a favorite among producers focused on specialty markets.
The variety’s small stature makes it easier to harvest by hand on steep slopes, and it responds well to careful processing, including washed and natural methods. Its rising popularity among progressive Colombian farmers and specialty buyers is a testament to its potential, not only as a standout cup but also as a valuable contributor to genetic diversity and the preservation of regional coffee identity. As these new plots begin producing, Verve’s partnership with local farmers is already resulting in some of the most distinctive and sought-after coffees in our lineup.
